Ventures in 2025 and 2026
Youngsters’ EcoQuests
See our Discovery Trails page.
Our latest EcoQuest took place in June-July 2025.
Our next, with EcoTraining in the peerless Makuleke, is scheduled for Saturday 26 June to Friday 3 July 2026. We have developed relationships with a number of schools who bring great candidates to our attention, but any organisation – or person – is welcome to suggest a youngster with promising credentials. Let us know via contact@discoverywt.org.
We are looking for senior primary school students (11-13 year-olds) with –
- demonstrated or developing interest in conservation, wildlife, nature, science and the outdoors
- demonstrated leadership or leadership potential
- self-discipline, independence and good behaviour
- ability to get on with others
- enthusiasm over the prospect of participation in a wilderness trail
- a bit of courage
- anything else a school or other nominating organisation may think relevant and important. Financial situation may be a consideration.
These are fully sponsored trails; so, no costs for the participants or their parents.
Fathers/Mothers/Grandparents – Girl/Boys Trails
Nothing scheduled, but if anybody wants to put a party together of anything between 6 and 16 participants for a trail of 4 to 7 days in the wilds, feel free to contact us. We will then liaise with EcoTraining or RETURNAfrica to set a fee. See Where the Wild Things [link??] are for an idea of what these trails are about.
San Wisdom programme
We have provisional dates – in September 2026 – for working and walking with the Ju/'hoansi Master trackers, in a programme convened by Koru Camp. These are encounters running over three to five days.
See Unlocking the stories of the wild with the San Master Trackers - Koru Camp to hear about the 2025 encounter.
Ichnology with the Master Trackers
We will be working with the Master Trackers again in October 2026, walking the shorelines of the Cape south coast. Interested in a citizen scientist involvement? Let us know and we will see what we can work out.
Skilling the next generation of Ju/'hoansi trackers
The Trust helps fund peer-to-peer adult tracker training under the auspices of the leading Ju/'hoansi Master Trackers in the Nyae Nyae Conservancy in Namibia.
This is an ongoing initiative which has been and continues to be supported largely by CyberTracker. Our assistance is supplementary, allowing adult community members to develop their skills in the field through a structured ‘bush-residential’ programme.
2025 has seen a new programme funded by our Trust. Members of the Ju/'hoansi Trackers Association, including the Master Trackers /ui-Kxunta and /ui-G/Aqo have begun visiting several primary schools in the Nyae Nyae countryside and taking the youngsters there through an immersive training experience, inducting them into the ancient art of tracking.
Many of the kids here will be picking up the skills ‘naturally’ but it always helps to have some truly expert guidance as well.
And looking to 2027
We have something in store involving the Origins Project.
